Impacts on Early Emotional Development

The region that I chose to share with you all is UNICEF Middle East and North Africa. The reasoning for choosing this region is because I have am of Middle Eastern descent and the topic of war and poverty in my homeland is an issue that is always raised in my household. My parents grew up in poverty in the Middle East, they had the opportunity to come to the United States and work hard, in working hard they were able to afford college and later on become professionals in their careers.
There are many challenges that children in these countries are facing, such as: lack of food, education, and health care. Malnutrition is one problem that children are facing, lack of food and nutrition, on the upside; UNICEF is working on providing school children with complementary food. This could lead to better results in their classrooms. They are working on putting more children in school and educating them so there is less of an unemployment rate in their future. 2 out of 5 young adults in these countries are in the workforce, and the goal is to make it 5/5. With lack of nutrition, children are not able to focus, and grow into healthy young adults.
By researching and learning from the UNICEF website, I was able to learn more about the Middle East and North Africa’s children and the challenges that they face on a daily basis. As an early childhood professional, I am able to appreciate and understand that being an educator changes the lives of children. Education is very important, and that is why I want to be an advocate for children who are not receiving education and struggling with receiving the basic necessities that every child should have.

  1. Angela,

The issue with poverty is global. Which affects children all over the world. I too chose a region that included countries in Africa. I am not from another country, however, I am a black woman who have African descendent. I am always intrigue when it comes to learning about the different countries in Africa. I learned that in certain regions children are affected and their development is being in jeopardy because schools are forced to close, children are faced with not having their provisions met. You said that your parents were living in poverty in a region in Africa. I know you can tell me a lot about what all that they had to encounter. It saddens me that this dilemma still exists even to this day.

  2. Hello Angela,

I enjoyed reading your post! I noticed when visiting you blog that everyone in our class decided to investigate an with Africa. I appreciate you sharing your families experience with having to endure poverty. The issue of their being a lack of food seems to be a major problem across all of Africa. At my school we do participate in fundraising that is sponsored by UNICEF. I think that is great that the organization is providing meals to help the children who are living in poverty in these countries. I plan to continue to support the efforts of UNICEF to the best of my ability to help all children across the globe. Thanks for sharing!
